As the civil engineering profession has evolved, expectations on infrastructure teams have increased. However, the ways in which those teams have been supported haven’t necessarily evolved at the same pace.
Many teams wind up balancing expedited project timelines, new technologies, workforce shortages, tighter budgets, public scrutiny, all while still producing high-quality work with minimal room for error.
The ASCE2027 vision and strategy session, “Building a Resilient Infrastructure Team,” explores real-world strategies for team resilience, engagement, and managing workforce burnout across multigenerational engineering environments.
In this ASCE Interchange Live, Jennifer Todd, founder of Apprentice Connector and moderator for the ASCE2027 vision and strategy session, previews the panel and discusses how infrastructure leaders are building resilient, engaged teams. Todd is also a member of the ASCE Industry Leaders Council.
This ASCE Interchange Live is part of a special series highlighting the vision, strategy sessions, key themes, and keynote voices of ASCE2027.
“When we think about resilience, we can’t just ask people to endure more,” said Todd. “It means that we are building teams that are properly supported, who are prepared for change, able to communicate honestly, and really equipped to recover when something doesn’t go as planned.”
Todd also discusses how burnout impacts engineering teams, and what strategies are proving most effective in addressing it. The panel discussion is part of ASCE2027 programming that addresses the "Future Workforce and Practice Methods” key theme of the event.
