Region 9 Society Director Official Nominee

Vision statement

My vision for ASCE Region 9 is grounded in a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and advocacy for the civil engineering profession. With more than 45 years of experience in consulting engineering and public infrastructure, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of engineers working together to strengthen communities. As Region 9 Director, I will champion a Society that empowers its members, fosters innovation, and upholds the highest standards of equity, integrity, and professional excellence.

Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy is rooted in service, mentorship, and inclusivity. I believe in leading by example—listening first, valuing diverse perspectives, and cultivating an environment where every member feels respected and empowered. Throughout my career, I have prioritized lifting others up, mentoring emerging professionals, and advancing equity in the workplace. True leadership is measured not only by professional accomplishments, but by the positive influence we have on those around us. As Director, I will continue to promote a culture of collaboration, transparency, and ethical stewardship.

Empowering Members and Future Leaders

Mentorship and professional development have been central to my career, including service as ASCE San Diego Section President and Treasurer and Governor of the Region 9 Board of Governors. I am committed to expanding opportunities for all members—students, early-career professionals, and seasoned engineers—to grow as leaders. By strengthening mentorship programs and supporting continuing education, we will cultivate a diverse pipeline of talent prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

Advancing Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure

Region 9 faces pressing challenges in sustainability, climate adaptation, and infrastructure resilience. My work has included securing funding and delivering hundreds of public works projects, ranging from water supply and sewer systems to parks and libraries. I will advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize sustainable design and resilient infrastructure, drawing on my experience in public outreach and stakeholder engagement to build consensus and drive meaningful progress.

Enhancing Advocacy and Public Awareness

Civil engineers play a vital role in shaping public policy and guiding infrastructure investment. As Director, I will work to amplify ASCE’s voice in legislative and regulatory arenas, advocating for sound infrastructure funding and policies that reflect our expertise. By elevating public awareness of our profession’s contributions, we can inspire future generations and reinforce the essential role of civil engineers in society.

Commitment to Service and Integrity

My career has been defined by service, integrity, and ethical leadership. As Region 9 Director, I will listen to member concerns, act with transparency, and represent our Region with diligence and respect. My experience leading large teams and complex projects has prepared me to serve as a bridge between the Board of Direction and our local units, ensuring that the voices of Region 9 members are heard, valued, and acted upon.

Conclusion

In summary, my vision is to lead Region 9 in advancing the civil engineering profession, supporting our members, and delivering lasting value to society. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient, and inclusive future for ASCE and the communities we serve.
