Ten Kate has been an influential leader in the field of municipal engineering for over 27 years. Boswell provides municipal engineering consulting services to over 30 municipalities in northern New Jersey, and Ten Kate serves as municipal engineer for the borough of Paramus, as well as for land use boards in Elmwood Park, Wyckoff, and Paramus. He guides the municipal department and trains new professional engineers in municipal engineering. He also oversees 17 professional engineers performing municipal engineering services.
From 2001 to 2017, Ten Kate served on the executive committee of the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers. He has served in all the offices of leadership, including president in 2007. He has also served that entire time as chairman of the legislative committee as well as on the New Jersey League of Municipalities legislative committee for five years. In his role as chairman of the legislative committee, Ten Kate has been an authoritative voice in protecting the practice of municipal and civil engineering from legislation that potentially could erode the profession. He is active in negotiating legislation with special interest groups and interested parties to protect municipalities and the profession, having testified before legislative committees in Trenton on behalf of the legislation.
Prior to his work at Boswell, Ten Kate served in various capacities at R.A. Hamilton Corp., a major construction highway and bridge company, in positions ranging from project superintendent to president of the company over a 16-year period. The firm also managed two asphalt plants, a stone quarry, and a sand plant. Ten Kate was responsible for major highway projects for NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, New Jersey Highway Authority, and multiple county and municipal bridge and culvert projects. He was also responsible in charge of the important installation of conduits and pipelines for the major utility companies in northern New Jersey and lower New York State.
Ten Kate's career began as an officer in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers supervising construction of recreational facilities, site development, and building rehabilitation.
