ASCE has honored Ko-Kwang Phoon, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, with the 2024 Alfredo Ang Award on Risk Analysis and Management of Civil Infrastructure for his technical contributions and leadership to research and practice in geotechnical risk and reliability.

Phoon is recognized as one of the global leaders in risk and reliability, particularly in geotechnical engineering. He is currently serving on the Executive Board of the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability (IASSAR), which is the largest and most established community leading reliability research in civil engineering. He has also led the two top technical committees in geotechnical risk and reliability as chair: the Geo-Institute Technical Committee on Risk Assessment and Management Committee (2003-2009) of ASCE and the Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management Committee (2010-2017) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). He is also the founding editor of Georisk (since 2007). He received the Norman medal in 2005 and 2020 for his groundbreaking papers in geotechnical engineering. He has more than 500 papers and has received more than 23,000 citations for his work.

The Alfredo Ang Award on Risk Analysis and Management of Civil Infrastructure recognizes outstanding contributions in one or more of the following fields of research: safety and reliability of engineering systems; life-cycle performance under uncertainty; durability and resilience of engineering systems; safety and performance under natural hazards; and related fields.
