ASCE has honored Tony C.G. Lau, P.E., ENV SP, F.ASCE, with the 2025 Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award for exemplary conduct, leadership in civil engineering, significant contributions to employments conditions, mentorship of young engineers, and dedicated service to the engineering community and beyond.
Lau exemplifies the highest standards of civil engineering professionalism, leadership, and service. With over three decades of distinguished contributions in both public and private sectors, he has consistently demonstrated exemplary professional conduct, technical excellence, and a deep commitment to advancing the civil engineering profession. As design production director at NAVFAC Hawaii, Lau leads multidisciplinary teams responsible for over $595 million in annual design and construction contracts. His leadership has transformed underperforming teams into high-functioning units, significantly improving employment conditions and professional development opportunities for engineers. His earlier tenure at HDR showcased his technical acumen, managing award-winning projects across the Pacific.
Lau’s impact extends far beyond his workplace. A lifelong ASCE member, he has served at every level – from Hawaii Section President to Society Director – championing initiatives that empower younger engineers. His leadership revitalized the Western Regional Younger Member Council, expanded mentorship programs, and institutionalized younger member representation in ASCE governance. In 2023, he personally raised nearly $10,000 to sustain the Edmund Friedman Endowment, ensuring the continuation of this very award.
Lau’s community service is equally inspiring. From leading fundraising efforts for Kalani High School athletics to volunteering with the American Cancer Society and local environmental initiatives, he embodies the civil engineer’s role as a community steward. His career is a testament to integrity, innovation, and service. He is indeed a role model.
The Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award is presented to a member, except an Honorary Member, of the Society who is judged to have contributed substantially to the status of the engineering profession by establishing a reputation for professional service.
