Charles G. Babcock, P.E., F.ASCE, vice president and national practice director for bridges and civil structures at AtkinsRéalis, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Babcock, in his commitment and dedication to the profession, deems his most significant achievement to be the improvement of local transportation through bridge replacements he has been involved with over the past 40 years. In more than 100 communities in the mid-Atlantic region and overseas, he has been able to meet the transportation requirements of towns and cities in need of a new bridge. He has been privileged to meet with local officials, business leaders, and towns people to imagine what a new bridge might look like, how it will meet the desires of the community, how it will be built, and what impacts it will have, both positive and negative, during construction and for decades to come.
The design of such a project has always been personal to him – his contribution to the community. Bringing together surveying, hydraulics, roadways, utilities, environmental, geotechnical, and structural engineering professionals along with contractors, utility owners, regulatory staff, and Departments of Transportation officials to plan, design, bid, and construct bridges that contribute to the greater civil society has been the mainstay of Babcock’s career. Doing so in a manner that is respectful of the people, the cultures, and the environment has been a most significant achievement.
Babcock has received honors such as appointment to PIARC, numerous committees, and an ACI award.
