Nicholas Chiocca Mannix, P.E., F.ASCE, manager of engineering at Woodward Design+Build in New Orleans, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
With more than 20 years in the design and construction industry, Mannix has built a career defined by vision, technical expertise, and a deep commitment to community. For more than a decade, he has led the Woodward Engineering team, focusing on the renovation and restoration of historic structures throughout New Orleans. His work has not only strengthened the built environment but also safeguarded the city’s unique architectural legacy.
Since earning his professional license in 2010, he has specialized in historic renovation projects, first in Philadelphia and New Jersey and now in New Orleans. Fascinated by archaic construction methods and how they endure over time, he has become a well-rounded engineer who thrives on breathing new life into neglected buildings. Under his leadership, derelict structures once threatened by “demolition by neglect” have been transformed into residences, offices, hotels, schools, and community centers – contributing to the revitalization of entire neighborhoods.
Among his most notable award-winning projects are landmarks that help define the New Orleans skyline and streetscape, including the Four Seasons Hotel, Factors Row, the NOPSI Hotel, and the Giani Building. Eight of his restoration projects have received historic preservation awards, underscoring both their technical achievement and cultural impact.
The greatest reward of his career has been seeing historic buildings returned to service as vibrant, functional spaces that honor the past while meeting the needs of the future.
