ASCE has honored Stephen J. Ressler, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, with the 2026 Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award for accomplishments that are engaging, funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and fantastic, conveying the occasionally complex mix of engineering, history, and culture that forms the heart of his work. He teaches the richness of engineering and its historic contributions to civilization.

Ressler is recognized for his exceptional contributions to civil engineering education and the advancement of historical and structural understanding within the profession.

During his distinguished tenure as a professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Ressler played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of hundreds of civil engineers worldwide. Among his many achievements, he co-developed the West Point Bridge Designer, an innovative educational tool that integrates engineering principles with historical context. This program introduces students to classic bridge types – such as trusses and deck arches – allowing them to model, design, and optimize structural prototypes. Through this hands-on approach, Ressler provided an accessible and practical means for students to engage with historical structures while applying modern engineering concepts.

Since his retirement, he has continued to advance the profession through the production of four engineering lecture series, two of which focus exclusively on the history of structures and engineering. His dedication to education and heritage even extended to international outreach, leading a team to Morocco for a Discovery Channel episode of Super Structures.

Ressler’s lifelong commitment to education, history, and innovation exemplifies the highest standards of the civil engineering profession.

The Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award is presented to those persons who, through writing, research, or other efforts, have made outstanding contributions to a better knowledge of, or appreciation for, the history and heritage of civil engineering.
