ASCE has honored Anil Agrawal, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, Dist.M.ASCE, with the 2026 George Winter Award for outstanding contributions in both structural engineering and mentoring of high school students in STEM.

Agrawal is a highly distinguished scholar and leader in the structural engineering field and has made foundational contributions that bridge the gap between theoretical advances in structural dynamics and their application to real-world engineering challenges and hazard events. He has been recognized for numerous engineering awards for his work and research in earthquake and wind engineering, structural control and health monitoring, and with the application of artificial intelligence and drone technology in infrastructure safety.

Outside of Agrawal’s technical and engineering-related accomplishments, his humanitarian contributions to society at large and through K-12 outreach showcase his commitment to mentoring and guiding future engineers. He has mentored high school students using Matlab software and machine learning techniques, started the Journal of High School Research to provide a platform for students to publish their research and problem-solving ideas, and organized the Infrastructure for High School Students conference in September of 2025. He is also known for his mentorship of students at CUNY, inspiring students and junior faculty through consensus and collaboration.

Lastly, Agrawal has made a lasting impact through the Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America as a volunteer, executive committee member, and general secretary in leading philanthropic initiatives to provide food, healthcare, and educational support of disadvantaged people in India and the United States.

The award is named for George Winter, world renowned teacher and researcher at Cornell University, who died in 1982. The George Winter Award is intended as a recognition of the achievements of an active structural engineering researcher, educator, or practitioner who best typifies the late Dr. Winter’s humanistic approach to his profession – i.e., an equal concern for matters technical and social, for art as well as science, for soul as well as intellect.
