Policy

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) endorses, supports, and promotes the professional licensure of engineers with appropriate standards for education, experience, examination, continuing professional development and professional conduct to protect and advance enhance the health, safety, and welfare of the public. 

Issue

Professional licensure through education, examination, experience and continuing professional development are necessary to protect and advance the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Rationale

Professional Engineers are entrusted to protect and advance the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Professional licensure of engineers is an essential requirement to achieve these objectives. The potential for weakening of licensing requirements is detrimental to the public health, safety, and welfare of the public. ASCE is committed to appropriate and consistent standards for licensure.
