The Bilal M. Ayyub Research Award for Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems recognizes outstanding contributions to modeling and management of risk and uncertainty in engineering systems. It was endowed by colleagues of Bilal M. Ayyub, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, Dist.M.ASCE and Hon.M.ASCE, founding editor-in-chief of the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems and instituted by the Board of Direction on March 16, 2026.

Rules

The award is made in accordance with the rules of the Society and the following rules:

  1. All original papers dealing with modeling and management of risk and uncertainty in engineering systems published in an ASCE journal are eligible.
  2. The paper is eligible for consideration when it appears in an online ASCE journal between July and June of the year preceding the year of award.
  3. Annually, up to two awards may be presented.
  4. The eligible papers will be reviewed by a committee of the Infrastructure Resilience Division, which shall recommend a winner/winners for final action by the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction.
  5. The lead author shall receive a certificate and honorarium, determined annually by and subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction based on the income from the award endowment. All other recipients shall receive only a certificate.
  6. The award will be presented at an appropriate Society event.
