The award is named for Professor David P. Billington, pioneering scholar of Structural Art at Princeton University, world renowned educator, and generous and inspirational mentor. He was a tireless public advocate for structural engineering, its societal relevance, and the importance of its interfaces with other disciplines. The Billington Award recognizes the excellence, profound public impact, and sustained achievements of a professional who best demonstrates the late David Billington’s legacy as applied to structural engineering education, research, and practice.
Rules
- The Billington Award may be given annually and is presented during the annual Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Awards Program.
- Each nomination must submit three letters of support, including one from a current SEI member.
- Nominees for the award can come from a diverse group of individuals, including students, educators, and practitioners. Self-nominations are also permitted.
- The nominations are reviewed by the SEI Technical Community award task committee, which shall select a nominee to recommend to the SEI Board of Governors for final approval.
- Recipients of this award will receive a recognition plaque from SEI.
