Nomination Deadline: October 1

The EWRI Early-Career Teaching Award is designed to recognize exceptional early achievements in teaching activities. Successful candidates will have demonstrated excellence in developing effective instruction; innovation in pedagogy and curriculum; commitment to student learning and professional growth; and collaboration with colleagues and the educational community. 

Rules

  1. An ad-hoc selection committee of three or more members from EWRI Awards Committee (EAC) will be formed and chaired by the vice chair of EAC.
  2. The selection committee will provide a recommendation to the EAC for their approval.
  3. A person who has been in professional practice and/or academia for less than a total of 12 years of full-time equivalent experience and is an active member of EWRI at the time of nomination (October 1 of the year preceding the year of award).
  4. Nominees will only be considered for one award type (research, teaching, or professional practice) per year.
  5. No one shall receive an EWRI Early-Career Research Award more than once.

Nomination Requirements

Each nomination package must include the following:

  • a completed nomination form,
  • a nomination letter,
  • a curriculum vitae,
  • up to 3 letters of support from students/former students, peers and leaders in the nominee’s field, and
  • a teaching portfolio (maximum 5 pages). See below for teaching portfolio guidance.

Teaching Portfolio Guidance

The Teaching Portfolio must be uploaded as a PDF document with 1-inch margins, 12-point font size (captions are exempt), single-spacing. Digital ePortfolios or URL links shall not be considered. Materials to include in a teaching portfolio are limited to but do not necessarily include all following items within 5 pages:

  1. Statement of teaching philosophy from nominee,
  2. Evidence of excellence in civil engineering education teaching (e.g., student evaluations, peer evaluations, etc.) as measured by student learning outcomes,
  3. Scholarly work published in educational venues,
  4. Sample teaching materials,
  5. Evidence of outreach and advisement to students,
  6. Sample syllabi demonstrating evidence of curriculum development, and
  7. Any other relevant items demonstrating excellence in teaching and a commitment to undergraduate civil engineering or civil engineering technology education.

Nominations

The complete nomination package should be submitted as one file via email to [email protected] by October 1 of each year. Nominees will remain under consideration for a period of up to three years.
