The intent of Standard 73 is to reverse ecosystem damage and climate change while continuing to design and build infrastructure that will improve standards of living for all people.

The standard includes several outcomes, described in eight chapters. This first webinar in a series of four presents:

  • An overview of the process of developing the standard with a description of where we are in this process.
  • A summary of Chapter 2 on Sustainability Leadership.

Why you need to attend:

  • Prepare for 2027 Regulations: These webinars are designed to inform practicing engineers who will ultimately need to alter their practice to satisfy a new version of Standard 73 expected in 2027, i.e., Standard 73-27.
  • From Guidelines to Mandatory Rules: The current Standard 73-23 describes what needs to be done for an infrastructure project to be considered sustainable, although project leaders can choose whether to follow through with all these requests. In contrast to the current version of the standard which is written in the form of guidelines, it is expected that Standard 73-27 will be a mandatory standard with a clear description of what needs to be done.
  • Real-World Application: Many infrastructure projects being designed and constructed today are not taking full advantage of sustainability opportunities. A fraction of infrastructure projects underway, however, are incorporating many sustainable features, and we can look to those projects as examples of what will be needed in future projects that must satisfy Standard 73-27. Some of the proposed webinars will include case studies of one or more projects underway.
