Purpose & Background

This course is designed to assist practitioners in using geospatial analysis to improve processes within infrastructure asset management applications for public and private utility owners. To accomplish this objective, the course will cover the three consecutive building blocks that are required to carry out geospatial analysis operations within asset management. The first block is the development of spatial analysis frameworks. Then, based on these frameworks, practitioners can build specific geospatial analysis methods for their respective asset management industry or application. Once the framework and methods are prepared, professionals can execute spatial analysis operations within asset management. Following this three step process, practitioners ensure that the systems they are responsible for (i.e. water distribution systems, roadway networks, power grids) are maintained operations and improved upon in an efficient manner by making decisions based on actual infrastructure data.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop spatial analysis frameworks that include primitive elements with spatial relationships to form a data infrastructure that can be used to carry out spatial analysis, processes, and statistics.
  • Build geospatial analysis models with spatial and temporal relationships for use in asset management applications.
  • Design enterprise information portals for use in asset management that include the development of spatial analysis frameworks and geospatial analysis models.
  • Use spatial analysis operations in asset management applications that consider geometric, density, query, distance, directional, and grid operations.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes:

Learning outcomes are assessed through multiple tests, interactive knowledge checks, and case studies, as well as weekly reflection exercises.
