Purpose and Background

Value Engineering (VE) is often treated as a bad word in our industry or misused as a term to make the process of descoping an overbudget project more palatable. However, VE is an important tool for Owners, Engineers, and General Contractors, providing a process for evaluating alternatives as cost-technical tradeoffs to achieve the best possible balance between cost, quality, and performance in a construction project’s scope. This course will introduce attendees to the fundamental theory, processes, tools, and techniques necessary to effectively conduct VE analyses that improve the opportunity for the project to achieve key performance and lifecycle objectives.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the theory, processes, and tools to conduct VE analyses
  • Conduct cost-tradeoff analysis to optimize the scope to the project's imperatives.
  • Quantify the value of scope alternatives in terms of cost, quality, and performance.
  • Develop realistic, project-focused VE proposals collaboratively addressing project stakeholder concerns.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
