Course Length: 2 hours
Purpose and Background
This presentation was recorded at the ASCE 2025 Convention.
The presentation detailed how contractors and design engineers use 3D, 4D, and 5D modeling to improve constructability, reduce risk, and enhance collaboration on complex civil infrastructure projects. Speakers showed how integrated models support conflict detection, quantity verification, utility coordination, and construction sequencing—capabilities that often reveal design issues invisible in 2D workflows. They demonstrated how GPS enabled equipment, AR assisted excavation, and manufacturer specific machine models improve field accuracy and safety.
Several case studies illustrated how model based analysis led to major design optimizations, reduced temporary works, improved traffic staging, and prevented costly fabrication errors. The session emphasized that shared, data rich models enable more efficient design build delivery and provide long term value for owners through accurate as built information.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain how 3D, 4D, and 5D modeling improves constructability, conflict detection, and risk reduction on complex civil infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrate how integrated models support quantity verification, utility coordination, and construction sequencing using real project examples.
- Evaluate the use of GPS-enabled equipment, AR-assisted excavation, and manufacturer-specific machine models to enhance field accuracy and safety.
- Assess how model-based design-build collaboration can optimize traffic staging, reduce temporary works, and prevent fabrication or geometric errors.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
- Structural Engineer
- Construction Engineer
- Design-Build Project Engineer
- Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Engineer
- Utility or Geospatial Engineer (with 3D modeling/GIS integration focus)
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 365 days of the course purchase.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
