This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Geo-Institute (G-I) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: Michael J. Byle, P.E., BC.GE., F.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Grouting is not just for your house flooring. Geotechnical grouting is the injection of materials into the ground to improve its behavior. It controls groundwater, stabilizes soft soils, improves dam foundations, and reduces liquefaction potential. This course introduces the various types of grouts including cement grouts, chemical solution grouts, colloidal grouts, soil-cement grouts, and the different approaches to injecting them. This course also provides an introduction to the factors that affect the selection of grouting equipment, methods and materials.
Purpose and Background
Grouting is used to control groundwater, stabilize soft soils, underpin structures, improve foundation capacity, arrest settlement, improve dam foundations, repair or prevent sinkholes in karst, reduce liquefaction potential and a variety of other applications.
Topics include: grouting in soil, grouting in rock, grout materials, grout injection methods, quality control of grouting, and verification of grouting performance. These topics are addressed at the introductory level to provide an understanding of what is involved in the planning, execution and verification of a geotechnical grouting project.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Soil Grouting
- Grouting
- Grouting Materials
- Grout injection methods
- Quality Control
- Grouting performance verification
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Obtain a general overview of factors relevant to geotechnical grouting leading to an understanding of how grouting technology can be applied to a variety of projects.
- Recognize the different types of grouting and where they are applicable
- General understanding of how geotechnical grouts improve subsurface conditions
- Identify the importance of verification to the success of grouting
- Determine how to plan for and specify grouting
Webinar Benefits
- Know the up to date terminology for grouting based on latest publications of the Geo-Institute Committee on Grouting
- Avoid the costly mistake of selecting the wrong type of grouting
- Learn new solutions for problem sites
- Know the right questions to ask when selecting a grouting method
- Add powerful grouting methods to your engineering tool kit
- Explore the possibilities of in-the-ground construction instead of excavation and dewatering
- Specify grouting with confidence
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
This is an introductory course that should benefit all civil engineers having an interest in ground related work. The subject matter will interest those involved in highways, water and wastewater, redevelopment and building restoration, water resources and dams, foundation design and remediation, groundwater control for construction, etc. Structural Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Water and Wastewater Engineers, as well as, owners and owners' representatives for dams, tunnels, and wastewater facilities will all benefit from this course.
Webinar Outline
- What is Geotechnical Grouting?
- How is it used?

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
