ASCE has honored Jian-Fu Shao, Ph.D., with the 2022 Maurice A. Biot Medal for his seminal contributions to understanding the role of microstructure to macroscopic behavior of porous materials.
Shao’s research on the constitutive response of porous materials is extensive, wide-ranging, and cutting-edge, and his contributions numerous. What uniquely characterizes his research are both the breadth and depth of his contributions to poromechanics. He has conducted research to address various fundamental issues, and it has led to seminal advances of an experimental, computational, and theoretical nature to the field.
Shao is also a prolific writer, having co-authored to this date 259 papers in refereed journals and two chapters in books, and having edited seven entire books. His work is highly regarded by the community, as can be confirmed by an h-index of 44 on the ISI Web of Science.
The Maurice A. Biot Medal was established to recognize the lifetime achievement of Dr. Maurice A. Biot, and is awarded to an individual who has made outstanding research contributions to the mechanics of porous materials.
