ASCE has honored South Dakota State University ASCE Student Chapter with the 2023 Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award for excellence in the effective and meritorious conduct of its affairs as a student chapter of ASCE through the ability and professional diligence of the chapter officers, members, and faculty advisors.

The Society has promoted excellence among its student chapters with this award in honor of former ASCE president Robert Ridgway. The award is made annually to the single most outstanding chapter. The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Student Chapter is a resourceful group of students who have a deep commitment to ASCE – they scored 90.86 out of a possible 97 points on their 2022 Annual Report. SDSU has 93 student chapter members, 63 of whom are ASCE members. This is up from 39 ASCE members in 2021 – a 21% increase. SDSU made it a goal to boost member participation in their local branch activities and had an average of 31 members attend each of the branch social events. Members of SDSU attended both their regional student symposium and Geo-Congress, where they were named the Geo-Video winner.

SDSU chapter members completed an impressive total of seven community service projects in 2022. They collected 530 pounds of food for a community food pantry, worked with Habitat for Humanity twice, engaged at two middle-school academic fairs, and directed traffic for a local 5K. Most impressively, they organized a Balsa Wood Bridge Competition for middle and high school students. Overall, the SDSU Student Chapter is a group of determined future engineers that everyone in ASCE can be proud of – this will be their second year in a row to receive the honor of most outstanding student chapter. Congratulations on an astounding achievement!

The Robert Ridgway Student Chapter is made to the single most outstanding student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
