ASCE has honored William J. Sproule, Ph.D., F.ASCE, with the 2025 James Laurie Prize for over three decades of invaluable contributions and service to the ASCE T&DI APM Committee and the transportation planning and engineering community.

Sproule has over 35 years of developing and teaching a wide variety of transportation planning and engineering courses, including airports, highways, traffic, traffic safety, and public transit with a special focus on automated people movers, bicycles and pedestrians, and railroads. 

He has amassed a substantial body of transportation research as well as working as a consulting engineer on over 28 projects. He has served as editor or co-editor for more than 10 ASCE APM and Airports Conferences, as well as authoring or co-authoring some 70-plus refereed technical papers and articles, among them the textbook Planning and Design of Airports, fifth edition.

Sproule served on TRB committees and as an Airport Cooperative Research Program ambassador. He also chaired the City of Houghton Transit Advisory Committee and numerous other community-level endeavors.

The James Laurie Prize recognizes contributions to the advancement of transportation engineering in research, planning, design, or construction.
