Purpose and Background

This presentation was recorded at the 2026 CI & CRC Joint Conference.

Green Roads, Gray Areas: Navigating the Realities of Microplastics in Sustainable Paving (22 minutes)

This presentation explores how microplastics and nanoplastics form, migrate through the environment, and intersect with pavement engineering. The speakers summarize findings from a recent interdisciplinary workshop and highlight the limited but growing body of research on microplastic behavior in civil infrastructure. Case studies demonstrate how recycled microplastics influence asphalt binder rheology, mixture performance, and cracking and rutting resistance. The session also presents early laboratory results on microplastic release under traffic loading and environmental exposure. Attendees gain a clearer understanding of both the sustainability potential and the environmental uncertainties associated with incorporating recycled plastics into pavements.

Paving the Way to Better Roads: A Unified Approach to Material, Construction, Maintenance, and Performance Data (18 minutes)

This session introduces a statewide data-integration system designed to evaluate how material properties, specification changes, and construction practices affect pavement performance. The speaker explains how historically fragmented databases made it difficult to assess performance trends or compare legacy and pilot specifications. The new platform consolidates QC/QA material data, pavement condition data, maintenance activities, and construction records into a single analytical environment. Users can benchmark specification performance, identify underperforming projects, and trace issues back to material or construction factors. The system supports more efficient, data-driven decision-making for pavement management and specification development.

Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System – Completion of Underground Works (54 minutes)

This presentation covers the geotechnical and tunneling components of the Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System, a major underground infrastructure project serving Central Texas. The project includes deep shafts, intake structures, and long rock tunnels constructed through low permeability limestone formations, requiring careful planning of excavation methods and support systems. The speakers describe tunnel boring machine operations, shaft construction, liner installation, and the challenges of connecting underground works to lake intake structures. The session highlights quality control, groundwater management, and sequencing strategies used to maintain safety and precision. Attendees gain insight into the engineering and construction practices that enabled successful completion of the underground phase.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate how microplastics and nanoplastics form, migrate, and interact with pavement materials and the environment.
  • Explain how integrated data systems improve evaluation of material properties, specifications, and pavement performance.
  • Describe the geotechnical, tunneling, and shaft-construction methods used in large-scale raw-water delivery projects.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).

Who Should Attend?

  • Structural Engineer
  • Construction Engineer
  • Geotechnical Engineer
  • Transportation Engineer
  • Construction Project Manager

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 365 days of the course purchase.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
