INSTRUCTOR:
Peter W. Somers, P.E., S.E., M.ASCE
Purpose and Background
This course will provide a summary of the updates to the Tier 1 seismic evaluation and Tier 2 seismic evaluation and retrofit procedures as well as the Benchmark Building provisions in ASCE/SEI 41-23. Used by engineers throughout the country for the evaluation and retrofit of relatively small and straightforward structures, these procedures have been updated to include clarifications and additions to the Tier 1 checklist statements and an expanded set of Tier 2 retrofit provisions. The Benchmark Building provision updates include better tracking with Risk Category and new provisions related to increased seismic hazards. The session will include some simple examples illustrating the updates.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the key changes introduced in ASCE 41-23 compared to previous versions of the standard.
- List the new terminology and classification updates, including the introduction of the Risk Category and its relevance to performance objectives.
- Explain the intent of the Benchmark Building provisions and seismic retrofits using Tier 2.
- Identify the implications of the updates on seismic evaluation procedures and retrofit strategies for different building types.
- Discuss the practical impacts of ASCE 41-23 updates on engineering practices, including design assumptions, analysis requirements, and expected outcomes.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
Practicing structural engineers of all levels and building officials reviewing seismic evaluation and retrofit projects.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
This course is worth .2 CEUs / 2 PDHs. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 365 days of the course purchase.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
