Purpose and Background

This presentation was recorded at the ASCE Construction Institute Summit 2025.

This presentation emphasizes the pivotal role civil engineers play in fostering social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic vitality through infrastructure projects. It explores how infrastructure decisions can create both opportunity and disparity in communities and urges engineers to consider the broader societal impacts of their work. The content outlines the ASCE Code of Ethics and its call for engineers to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Real-world examples and questions prompt critical thinking around fairness, accessibility, and engagement with marginalized populations. The presentation also challenges traditional assumptions about efficiency and cost, advocating for more inclusive, community-driven approaches. It ultimately calls for a cultural shift within the civil engineering profession toward greater responsibility, humility, and justice in practice.
