This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education

Instructor: Alexander Newman, P.E., F.ASCE

Course Length: 1.5 Hours

Purpose and Background

This presentation explores the design, behavior, and applications of moment-resisting connections in steel structures. These connections are critical for transferring bending moments and shear forces between structural members, allowing frames to resist lateral loads such as wind and earthquakes. We will examine both welded and bolted connection types, highlighting their roles in ensuring structural rigidity and ductility. Key design considerations include load paths, connection stiffness, and deformation capacity, all of which influence a structure's performance under stress. Standards and specifications from AISC and FEMA will be referenced to illustrate best practices and ensure code compliance. Case studies and testing data will provide insight into real-world applications and connection performance. The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of moment connections' role in safe and resilient steel construction.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental principles and behavior of moment-resisting connections in steel structures.
  • List the various types of moment-resisting connections and their key components.
  • Explain the design criteria and performance requirements for rigid and semi-rigid steel connections.
  • Discuss the effects of connection flexibility and stiffness on the overall structural behavior.
  • Identify common failure modes and detailing considerations for moment-resisting connections.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).

Who Should Attend?

  • Structural Engineers
  • Civil Engineers
  • Steel Detailers
  • Construction Engineers

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
