Instructor: Praveen K. Malhotra, Ph.D., P.E., MASCE
Course Length: 2 hours
Purpose and Background
The USGS have revised their estimate of the seismic hazard throughout the country. The code committee has revised procedures to compute the seismic design ground motions. This webinar will discuss the upcoming changes in seismic design ground motions in ASCE 7-22. Three methods of generating the design ground motions will be discussed:
- General procedure (GP)
- Ground motion hazard analysis (GMHA)
- Dynamic site-response analysis (SRA)
General procedure is simplest, but in many situations ASCE 7-22 requires a GMHA. In some special situations, a dynamic analysis is required to generate the design ground motions. During this webinar, a real-life example will be solved in a step-by-step manner so the attendees can learn by reproducing the results and asking questions. Discussions are encouraged during the webinar. A soft copy of the entire class notes will be provided before the webinar.
Learning Outcomes and Benefits
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the basis of current and future requirements in ASCE 7
- Apply various tools to perform GMHA and dynamic site-response analysis
- Explain the ASCE 7-22 requirements for site-specific design ground motions
- Avoid commonly made mistakes in generating the design ground motions
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
