Purpose and Background

These presentations were recorded at the ASCE Ports Conference 2025

Wharf Inspection, Repair, and Resilience at the Port of Long Beach (22 minutes)

This presentation provides an inside look at the Port of Long Beach’s comprehensive waterfront inspection and repair program. Attendees will learn how the port manages structural inspections, underwater assessments, and cathodic protection to extend the life of critical wharf infrastructure. The session highlights major repair efforts at Pier C and Pier J, challenges related to sea level rise, and upgrades to fenders, bollards, and seismic components. Real-world lessons in resilience planning and asset management are emphasized throughout.

An Update of PIANC WG233’s Manual for the Inspection, Maintenance & Repair of Waterfront Facilities (20 minutes)

This session reviews the latest developments from PIANC Working Group 233 as it updates international best practices for marine infrastructure maintenance. This presentation outlines a holistic asset management framework that includes degradation assessment, digital inspection tools, intervention strategies, and long-term monitoring. The session also introduces new terminology and guidance for repair versus rehabilitation decisions, use of remote sensing, and preservation planning. Engineers and asset managers will benefit from the manual’s practical, globally informed recommendations.

Bulk Material Shiploader Structure Inspection Fatigue Analysis (20 minutes)

This session explores a detailed fatigue life analysis of a bulk material shiploader using advanced instrumentation and field monitoring. Presenters describe how strain gauges and structural data were used to evaluate stress ranges and estimate remaining service life in large steel girders. The project’s approach—integrating real-time data with fatigue modeling techniques—offers a valuable example of managing aging infrastructure in demanding marine environments. Key insights are shared for asset evaluation, inspection planning, and fatigue risk mitigation.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the inspection process used by the Port of Long Beach to assess above- and below-water wharf conditions, including phase-based reporting and damage categorization.
  • Define key components of a holistic asset management approach for marine infrastructure, including degradation, intervention, and monitoring.
  • Explain how strain gauge instrumentation is used to assess fatigue life in large steel structural systems subject to repeated loading.
  • Analyze the process of converting field data into stress cycles and using fatigue evaluation methods to estimate remaining service life.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).

Who Should Attend?

  • Port engineers
  • Port authority staff
  • Project managers
  • General contractors
  • Early career professionals

How to Earn Your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
