Ting-Hua Yi, Ph.D., S.E., F.ASCE, the Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor and vice president of the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction. 

Yi had worked till recently at Dalian University of Technology (DUT) since graduating there in 2007, serving as the vice dean and dean of the School of Civil Engineering. At the beginning of this year he transferred to BUCEA. He conducted his postdoctoral research at Tongji University from 2007 to 2010, and worked as a visiting scholar at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius, Macedonia, for three months in 2003.

He has been actively participating in ASCE activities and making continuous contributions for almost 20 years. During his postgraduate studies at DUT, he joined the ASCE Student Chapter in 2006. His research contributions focus on the safety of long-span bridges subjected to complicated loading effect, especially big data-driven bridge multistage damage diagnosis, time-varying performance assessment. and multi-level early warning methods. He has served as PI for over 20 global and national competitive research projects, such as the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (NSFC). He holds over 60 invention patents, with seven authorized in the United States.

He has also edited 18 technical standards and published seven books and over 210 peer-reviewed journal articles (78 in ASCE journals). His journal articles have received widespread recognition from peers, including the Best Research Award of ASCE’s Journal of Bridge Engineering, Best Paper Award of the Journal of Aerospace Engineering (ASCE), Most Cited Article of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics (ASCE), etc.

Additionally, he was awarded Outstanding Reviewer for 2024. With his research achievements, he has played a leading role in winning one National and four Provincial Science and Technology Awards, as well as a Gold Medal of Geneva International Invention Exhibition. He has also been awarded the ASCE Greater China Distinguished Leadership Medal, the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the National Excellent Scientific and Technical Worker, the Xplorer Prize, the ICCEE Outstanding Scientist Award in South Korea, the Fok Ying Tung Young Teacher Award in Hong Kong, China, in the Most Cited Chinese Researchers in Elsevier (Since 2014), and as among the World’s Top 2% Scientists List of Stanford University (career-long impact).

He is currently a council member of the International Society for SHM of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII), chair of the Early Career Researchers Committee of ISHMII, a member of the Advanced Materials and Structures Committee of ASCE/ASD, and others. He has delivered over 70 keynotes or invited lectures at renowned conferences. In addition, he serves as an editorial board member for over 20 journals, including Elsevier’s JCR-Q1 journals Engineering and Measurement.

He received his bachelor degree from Yantai University in 2002, and his doctoral degree from DUT in 2007.
