Joel Cranford has over 33 years of experience in traffic engineering and is currently the director of the Municipal and School Transportation Assistance (MSTA) section. This section provides traffic engineering assistance to small municipalities and schools across all of North Carolina. For more than 19 years this group has assisted with transportation issues affecting the design, construction and daily operations at public and private schools, colleges, and community colleges. During that time, they have gained extensive knowledge of pedestrian/bicycle safety and traffic operations specific to schools both on campus and along nearby roadways. A major accomplishment of the group is the development of the web based MSTA School Traffic Calculator. This calculator has proven to be very helpful for proposed schools in site selection and campus design and existing schools with operating their student loading process safer, more efficiently and with fewer motorists’ frustrations. Ongoing efforts are promoting the need to build school campuses and parking lots that emphasize pedestrian safety over vehicle maneuverability and parking spaces.
