This webinar is part of a 3-part series on HEC-RAS.
The suggested order of courses:
- 1. Using RAS-Mapper HEC-RAS V5.0
- 2. Using HEC-RAS 5.0 for Two Dimensional Hydraulic Analyses (AWI011516)
- 3. Using HEC-RAS 5.0 for a Coupled 1D/2D Analysis (AWI021216)
Instructor: Lonnie Anderson, P.E., CFM
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
Floodplain analysis is one of the primary functions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center's HEC-RAS software program.? RAS Mapper allows the modeler to quickly view floodplain extents without using another GIS or CADD program.? The modeler can more easily identify issues with model results and know where to make improvements.
Visualization of hydraulic results is extremely useful for model review and presentation to clients and for reports and submittals.? RAS Mapper allows for the display of water surface elevations (traditional floodplain mapping), floodplain depths, floodplain boundary and flow velocities. This allows for very specialized presentation of hydraulic results for almost every type of hydraulic analysis.
This webinar focuses on a more in-depth look at the use of RAS Mapper within HEC-RAS.? The webinar provides a discussion on the use of RAS Mapper and not the hydraulic analysis features of the software.? Emphasis is be placed on input and working with the RAS Mapper function. Participants who wish to attend this webinar must be well-versed in using the HEC-RAS program and GIS software.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Differences in RAS Mapper between HEC-RAS V4.1 and V5.0
- RAS Mapper basics and data layers
- Terrain processing
- Using hydraulic results to view floodplain extents
- Mapping other hydraulic variables
Webinar Outline
- RAS Mapper V4.1 quick overview of basics
- RAS Mapper V5.0 changes and advances
- Importing background data
- Terrain processing
- Incorporating proposed conditions terrain into model
- Flood extents results output mapping to CADD software
- Mapping other hydraulic variables
Benefits and Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe how to add terrain, shapefiles, and web imagery directly within HEC-RAS.
- Explain how to apply land use roughness factors in 2D modeling.
- Identify techniques to efficiently map floodplain results.
- Explain how to analyze model output for reasonableness.
- Describe the process of generating floodplain, floodway, depth grids, and base flood elevation mappings for use in CADD software.
- Discuss the differences between HEC-RAS 4.1 and 5.0 versions of RAS Mapper.
- Explain how to map flooding depths, velocities, flood extents, and floodway limits.
- Describe strategies to transition to 2D tools available in HEC-RAS 5.0.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
Civil engineers seeking to gain knowledge on the RAS Mapper feature of HEC-RAS.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
