Purpose and Background

These presentations were recorded at the AEI 2025 Conference.

Beyond Blueprints: Collaborative Approaches to High-Performance Building Design (46 minutes)

This presentation explores how integrated, multidisciplinary collaboration leads to high-performance building outcomes. It highlights strategies for engaging all stakeholders early in the design process, from owners and architects to engineers and operators, to align performance goals with building functions. The session emphasizes how communication, goal setting, and shared digital models contribute to optimized energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term sustainability. Real-world examples are used to illustrate the value of an iterative, collaborative design approach. The presenters also discuss tools that support integrated workflows and team decision-making. Attendees gain insight into how collaborative planning can prevent rework and increase project value across the lifecycle. The presentation ultimately redefines success in design by integrating performance, functionality, and collaboration.

Technology Rich Immersive Design for Facility Management (43 minutes)

This presentation examines the use of immersive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and digital twins, in facility management and building operations. It outlines how these tools improve spatial understanding, maintenance planning, and lifecycle management. The presenters share examples where immersive design environments enhanced stakeholder engagement and decision-making. Emphasis is placed on the operational phase of buildings, where digital models and simulations facilitate more efficient maintenance and adaptability. The presentation also demonstrates how immersive platforms support training, asset tracking, and predictive maintenance. Through case studies, attendees learn how these technologies bridge the gap between design intent and real-world performance. Ultimately, the session showcases how immersive tools can transform the management and optimization of complex facilities.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of early stakeholder involvement in achieving high-performance building outcomes.
  • Identify key tools and strategies that support collaboration across design and engineering disciplines.
  • Discuss how integrated workflows improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and overall project success.
  • List practical applications of AR, VR, and digital twins in managing building systems and assets.
  • Explain how digital environments support training, predictive maintenance, and long-term building performance.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).

Who Should Attend?

  • Architectural Engineers
  • Structural Engineers
  • Sustainability Consultants
  • Construction Engineers
  • Academic and Professional Researchers
  • Early Career Professionals

How to Earn Your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
