POLB Fireboat Station No.20: A State-of-the-Art Facility for Firefighting and Emergency Response (22 minutes)

This presentation highlights the planning, design, and construction of the Port of Long Beach’s Fireboat Station No. 20—a critical emergency response facility built to modern resilience and performance standards. Located in a seismic and coastal hazard zone, the facility integrates hardened structural elements, advanced building systems, and emergency readiness features. The presentation explores the project’s technical challenges, design innovations, and interagency collaboration. Attendees will gain insight into how marine-based emergency infrastructure is engineered for durability, safety, and 24/7 operational continuity.

Alternative Method to Estimate the Seismic Demand of Wharves by Using 3D-Modal Pushover Analysis (21 minutes)

This session introduces an alternative analytical approach to estimating seismic demand on wharves using 3D-modal pushover analysis. The method improves upon traditional linear procedures by capturing nonlinear behavior, structural dynamics, and multi-directional loading effects in complex waterfront structures. Case examples illustrate how the approach enhances design accuracy, particularly in high-seismic regions with soil-structure interaction considerations. Attendees will learn how this method can support performance-based seismic design for pile-supported marine infrastructure.

From Ashes to Concrete: Berths 177-178 Wharf Restoration (20 minutes)

This presentation tells the story of the structural recovery and rebuild of Berths 177–178 following fire damage. Engineers navigated site safety concerns, existing infrastructure limitations, and design constraints to deliver a resilient, modernized wharf. The session details assessment, demolition, and reconstruction strategies used to restore port operations while improving structural capacity. Attendees will take away lessons in disaster recovery, coordination, and phased marine construction delivery.
