This certificate awards a certificate of completion and an optional digital badge. It does not award PDH or CEU credits.

This certificate is designed to develop the leadership capabilities of civil engineering professionals as they transition from team contributors to effective leaders. Participants will explore the qualities and principles of strong leadership while reflecting on personal values, motivations, and leadership styles. The curriculum emphasizes core leadership behaviors such as ethical decision-making, modeling professional conduct, representing diverse stakeholder perspectives, and fostering creativity and innovation within teams.

Through case studies, interactive exercises, and real-world scenarios, learners will practice applying leadership strategies to project management, delegation, corrective action planning, and team advocacy. The certificate highlights the distinctions between team member and leadership roles while focusing on communication techniques that inspire, guide, and support team performance. Special attention is given to project execution and managing team dynamics, including conflict mediation, collaboration across dispersed teams, and cultivating a growth mindset.

By the end of the certificate, participants will be prepared with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to step into leadership roles, equipped to manage complex projects, support their teams, and drive organizational success in the field of civil engineering.

Format

This certificate is a hybrid asynchronous 8-week certificate with four live training sessions scheduled every other week with the course facilitator(s). Participants can expect to spend 2-4 hours/week course time to work through the content. Learning activities include PowerPoint presentations with voice over, subject-matter-expert video testimony, audio clips, written information, practice activities, quizzes, peer and facilitator reviewed assignments, and a discussion board.

  • Recognize and reflect on personal values and motivations and analyze how they influence individual leadership style.

  • Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of a team member versus a leader, highlighting new leadership functions.
  • Explain the key responsibilities that new leaders must develop, including managing multiple projects, advocating for their team, creating corrective action plans, and delegating tasks effectively.
  • Examine and apply effective leadership communication strategies to guide and support a team.
  • Explore best practices for strategic planning and project execution in a leadership role.
  • Investigate methods for successfully managing team dynamics, including those in dispersed teams, through collaboration, conflict mediation, and building a growth mindset.

Assessment of learning outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment. The exam must be passed with at least a 70% and 3 attempts are granted.
