This certificate awards a certificate of completion and an optional digital badge. It does not award PDH or CEU credits.
This certificate is designed to strengthen the teamwork and collaboration skills essential for civil engineering professionals. Participants will examine the roles and responsibilities within engineering teams while exploring how emotional intelligence enhances cooperation, problem-solving, and overall effectiveness. The curriculum emphasizes the qualities of successful team members, including accountability, time management, planning, adaptability, and clear communication.
Through case studies, interactive exercises, and practical scenarios, learners will gain experience in navigating team dynamics, balancing workloads, and integrating constructive feedback. The certificate also highlights strategies for cross-mentoring, remote collaboration, and fostering inclusive, supportive team environments. Special attention is given to the value of flexibility and adaptability in addressing the complex and evolving challenges of civil engineering projects.
By the end of the certificate, participants will be equipped with the tools and confidence to contribute as effective team members and leaders—ensuring that their collaboration strengthens project outcomes and advances the success of their organizations.
Format
This certificate is a hybrid asynchronous 8-week certificate with four live training sessions scheduled every other week with the course facilitator(s). Participants can expect to spend 2-4 hours/week course time to work through the content. Learning activities include PowerPoint presentations with voice over, subject-matter-expert video testimony, audio clips, written information, practice activities, quizzes, peer and facilitator reviewed assignments, and a discussion board. Participants can complete the three-part series in approximately eight months.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the purpose of civil engineering teams and list the various roles and responsibilities within those teams.
- Apply principles of emotional intelligence to enhance collaboration and effectiveness in a team setting.
- Demonstrate the qualities of an effective civil engineering team member, including understanding and practicing responsibility and accountability, using effective time management strategies, employing planning techniques, and exhibiting strong team communication skills.
- Explore best practices for successfully navigating team dynamics, such as balancing workload, accepting and integrating constructive criticism, engaging in co-mentoring relationships, and contributing to remote teamwork.
- Examine the benefits of adaptability and flexibility when working as part of a team.
Assessment of learning outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment. The exam must be passed with at least a 70% and 3 attempts are granted.
