This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) and ASCE Continuing Education

Instructor:  Edward J. Wimmer, P.E., M.ASCE

Course Length: 1.5 Hours

Purpose and Background

Although many agencies have adopted standards and guidelines for designing streets in residential subdivisions, the results have been mixed. This is because the impacts of street widths and tangential lengths on vehicle operating speed are not clearly understood. This presentation will discuss the effect of street widths and tangential lengths on driver’s speed on residential streets and what can be done to control speed on residential streets for new subdivisions. This presentation will also be applicable to redevelopment projects. The use of cul-de-sacs and their impacts on non-motorized vehicles will also be discussed. The instructor will illustrate these using street design examples from different subdivisions that result in lowering speed limits. Traffic calming features used during street construction will also be covered. A reference list will be provided that includes articles, websites, and other study material.

Learning Outcomes and Webinar Benefits

This webinar will help you learn the goals of residential street designs and the best practices to accomplish them, the best sources of information on best practices, lot layout, street designs, addressing pedestrian and bicycle circulation, gated communities and designing traffic calming treatments in new subdivisions. You will learn from examples of recent subdivisions that have incorporated traffic calming into their designs as well as subdivisions where retrofitting of traffic calming measures will inevitably be necessary.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine how to design residential streets
  • Determine what key design decisions impact vehicle operating speeds
  • Find out what works and what does not

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

Intended Audience

This webinar will benefit transportation professionals (engineers and planners) who work for consulting firms, cities and counties, involved in designing streets for residential subdivisions. Having some background and training in residential traffic design will be helpful.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
