Purpose and Background

This session will provide attendees with the latest advances in the industry and academia centered on sustainability practices in geotechnical engineering. Topics include: The Reuse of Foundations: A simple matter of using an asset you have; The use of 100% Recycled Plastics for Infrastructure Projects in conjunction with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC); Biopolymers as a sustainable solution for the enhancement of soil properties; Bridge Deicing in Texas Using Shallow Geothermal Energy; AND Engineering a Greener Future: Harnessing the Power of Geosynthetics for Sustainable Solutions. Valuable perspectives and findings from both industry and academia will be represented in this session. These lectures will be mainly delivered by members of the Geo-Institute’s Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering committee, to strengthen the attendees’ confidence in existing sustainability practices and technologies and showcase the latest techniques developed to advance effective and environmentally friendly geotechnical practices.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of these sessions, you will be able to:

  • Explain the benefits and challenges of reusing existing foundations in construction projects.
  • Discuss how recycled plastics and LDCC can be combined to create sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure materials.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the application of shallow geothermal energy for bridge deicing and its contribution to sustainable transportation infrastructure.
  • Identify insights into the various applications of geosynthetics and their role in providing sustainable engineering solutions for environmental challenges.
  • Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Achievement of the learning objectives will be assessed through a short post-test.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

This course is worth 0.2 CEUs/2 PDHs. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test online and receive a passing score of 70% or higher.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

    1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
