Jon Galsworthy, Ph.D., PE

Purpose and Background

This session will present the principles of Performance Based Wind Design (PBWD), a design method that leverages state-of-the-art procedures in wind engineering and structural analysis to study the dynamic behavior of buildings and structures at various Performance Objectives. It will review the process and procedures outlined in the SEI Pre-standard for PBWD including: Performance Objectives, Wind Demand Characterization, Modeling and Analysis and Acceptance Criteria for Main Wind Force Resisting System (MWFRS). The webinar will also present a case study of a building designed and constructed following PBWD in Austin, TX.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • ??Explain the process outlined in the SEI Pre-standard for PBWD
  • Explain the differences between wind design using static wind pressures and true dynamic wind loads
  • Identify buildings and structures that benefit from PBWD?

Who Should Attend?

  • Structural Engineers
  • Wind Engineers / Wind Engineering Specialists
  • Civil Engineers
  • Architects
  • Building Code Officials / Plan Reviewers
  • Project Managers / Construction Managers
