Purpose and Background
This four-course series presents principles, processes, and implementation strategies for Strategic Asset Management* (ISO 55000 et seq.) in the context of the needs and resources of the North American public port industry. Participants will explore global best practices, assess their organization’s readiness, and begin developing a roadmap for integrating strategic asset management into their port’s fixed asset, capital planning, and significant maintenance decision making processes.
Course I provides a foundational introduction to Strategic Asset Management (SAM) for the public port industry, focusing on the principles, practices, and early tasks needed to build an effective asset management approach. The course helps participants understand global trends, define strategic goals, and recognize common challenges ports face when implementing SAM. Through discussions, case examples, and guided exercises, participants assess their current maturity, explore governance and risk considerations, and begin developing a tailored roadmap that aligns asset management with organizational priorities, funding decisions, and longterm sustainability.
The series is designed to move beyond theory and enable participants to translate asset management concepts into actionable governance, data, condition assessment, and capital planning practices tailored to real world port constraints. Participants will track progress and define approaches for continuous improvement across planning, funding, delivery, and lifecycle management.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain global trends and practices in port asset management.
- Craft a tailored SAM strategy for your port that includes continuous improvement.
- Identify and assess relevant governance models for AM success.
- Identify and quantify risk factors across key assets/asset classes.
- Identify approaches, including costs/benefits for data management, GIS, and software needs/solutions, and condition assessments across key assets/asset classes.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
Port managers involved in planning, financing, operating, and maintaining critical capital assets, from decision makers to first-line supervisors, including, for example, the following departments: executive, planning, engineering, finance, IT, operations, maintenance, and business development.
Additionally, attendees include public agencies at the federal, state, and local levels that have some responsibility for freight transportation planning and funding. Private-sector marine terminal operators, port industry consultants, port industry customers, and other stakeholders may find the content helpful.
Content will be delivered through both an executive lens (strategy, governance, risk, funding) and a practitioner lens (data, workflows, assessments, tools) to ensure relevance across roles.
