Purpose and Background
This session will present the principles of Performance-Based Design (PBD). It will as an introduction to the subsequent sessions on specific hazards (e.g. seismic) by providing an overview of the general Performance-Based Design process. The session will address performance targets, service life, hazards/loading, target reliability, acceptance criteria, methods to meet the acceptance criteria, peer view, and high-level PBD examples. Attendees of the session will take away a broad understanding of the "why" and "how" of PBD.
