Purpose and Background

The museum expansion serves as a powerful example of how strategic master planning, long-term collaboration, and adaptable engineering can support the successful evolution of a complex institution over decades. This presentation explores the planning, design, and execution of a 200,000-square-foot, $300+ million phased expansion completed over a 20-year period. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges of maintaining architectural continuity, system performance, and project quality across multiple phases while accommodating changing technologies, evolving exhibit requirements, and shifting operational needs.

Through this project showcase, participants will learn how the design team integrated MEPF systems across two decades of construction, future-proofed critical infrastructure to support later phases, and embedded flexibility into the facility's core systems. The session will highlight practical strategies for anticipating long-term change, maximizing the value of master planning, and delivering resilient, adaptable facilities that can evolve with future demands while maintaining operational excellence.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify how effective master planning of a multi-phase project saves substantial money in the long run and leverages funding to attract donors.
  • Design for inevitable changes over the long haul e.g. technology becoming obsolete, new infrastructure becoming existing.
  • Implement design and pre-construction processes today for construction in future phases.
  • Explain the importance of futureproofing the central plant to provide for later phases.
  • List the benefits of keeping the team together over 20 years.

Who Should Attend?

  • Project Architect
  • Architectural Engineer
  • Mechanical Engineering Manager
  • Construction Program Manager
  • Structural Engineering Manager
  • Sustainability and Resilience Manager
  • Facilities Director

How to Earn Your PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
