This webinar is hosted by the SEI Performance Based Design of Structures technical committee.

INSTRUCTORS:
Teng Wu, Ph.D, F.ASCE
Franklin Lombardo, Ph.D, EIT, M.ASCE
Brian Skourup, P.E., S.E., M.ASCE

Purpose and Background

This presentation will detail how the ASCE 7 wind speed maps are developed from regional climate data. Presenters will cover how the prescribed wind speeds are calculated from reliability analysis. Attendees will learn when an analytical alternative to mapped wind speeds creates stakeholder value and how building code acceptance for this alternative is possible through performance-based provisions. Presenters will demonstrate how design wind speed return periods are determined as a function of target reliability indices and why some projects may warrant calculating design wind speeds in lieu of using the mapped wind speeds. Upon completing the webinar, attendees will better understand performance-based provisions and the Performance Based Wind Design pre-standard, including how alternative design wind speeds determined by calculation may be accepted for project-specific use. This webinar seeks to address how engineers can achieve more accurate and consistent design reliability with performance based design rather than prescriptive design procedures.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply asset-level deterioration, hazard exposure, and uncertainty translations into quantitative reliability models that support better planning and investment decisions.
  • Explain how system-level dependencies, correlated failures and cascading impacts can affect infrastructure performance during extreme events.
  • Implement advanced analytical methods to prioritize mitigation strategies, communicate risk, and strengthen the resilience of electric and gas utility systems.

Who Should Attend?

  • Structural engineers
  • Resilience Engineer
  • Risk Engineer

How to Earn Your PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

This session is worth 1 PDH. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to attend the live session or watch the recording and then certify your attendance. If the course is taken On-Demand, there will be a 10 multiple choice question post-test.
