Purpose and Background
This presentation will discuss Chapters 6–11 of MOP 161, giving the audience a detailed review of additional foundation systems used in overhead power line and substation applications. Attendees will explore the engineering behavior, design considerations, and installation characteristics of large diameter steel pipe piles, driven piles, micropiles, helical piles, continuous flight auger piles, and tension only anchors. The session addresses the persistent industry challenge of inconsistent foundation design practices by clarifying how these systems should be evaluated and applied across varying geotechnical and structural conditions. By the end, participants will gain a more uniform, defensible approach to selecting and designing pile and anchor foundations for real-world power delivery projects.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Distinguish the engineering behavior, installation methods, and design applications of large diameter steel pipe piles, driven piles, micropiles, helical piles, continuous flight auger piles, and tension only anchors.
- Apply the design principles and evaluation criteria outlined in Chapters 6–11 of MOP 161 to improve consistency in overhead line and substation foundation design.
- Evaluate geotechnical conditions, loading demands, and constructability factors to justify the selection of pile or anchor systems for real-world power delivery projects.
Who Should Attend?
- Civil Engineering students
- Recent Civil Engineering graduates
- Engineering practitioners
- Electric utilities engineers
How to Earn Your PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
