Active Transportation and Street and Highway Operations Committee Joint Update

The T&DI Board of Governors recently approved the Active Transportation Committee - a new technical committee focusing on modes of active transportation such as bicycling and walking - under the Roadways Council, with Dr. Cong Chen of the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida serving as Committee Chair and Daniel Murphy of Tighe & Bond as Vice Chair. The Active Transportation Committee began as the Complete Streets Subcommittee (task force) in the Street and Highway Operations Committee.

Both committees were excited to attend and assist with coordination at ICTD 2023 in Austin, Texas, including conference session setup and moderation, poster judging, and other activities. SHOC held their committee meeting on-site at ICTD 2023, and attendees were pleased to get together in person again after the pandemic. Similarly, the Active Transportation Committee held its first committee meeting at ICTD 2023 with seven in-person and five remote attendees including conference attendees interested in joining.

The Committee Chairs are thrilled with the turnout and look forward to working together to expand and build a better transportation community. Any ASCE or T&DI members interested in joining either committee are encouraged to submit an application and select Street and Highway Operations and/or Active Transportation as committees of interest.
