INSTRUCTORS: Ryan Lalum and Steve Kelly

This course is part of a three part PDXNext webinar series. You may take this session on its own or explore all three courses in the series.

Purpose and Background

This session explores the technology infrastructure that supports the PDXNext redevelopment, focusing on designing for resilience, flexibility, and future operational needs. The team modernized critical systems - including communications, common use airline technologies, and emerging digital platforms - while maintaining full airport operations. Attendees will learn how strategic planning, stakeholder coordination, and forward looking design enabled a robust technology backbone capable of supporting day one operations and future innovations.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how technology infrastructure was phased to maintain operational continuity during construction.
  • Explain how redundancy and resilient systems were integrated to ensure secure communications.
  • Identify strategies for designing flexible, future ready infrastructure that supports evolving technologies.
  • Describe how interdisciplinary collaboration enabled seamless integration of technology into architectural and operational systems.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test exam involving true-false and multiple-choice questions.

Who Should Attend?

  • Technology and IT infrastructure designers
  • Airport operations and systems managers
  • Low voltage and communications engineers
  • Architects and integrated design teams
  • Owners, developers, and program managers
  • Technology planners and digital experience specialists

Outline

  • Overview of technology goals within the PDXNext redevelopment
  • Phasing strategies for maintaining secure operations during construction
  • Redundant systems design: MDFs, power distribution, and communications pathways
  • Integration of common use airline systems and secure networks
  • Preparing for future technologies: sensors, video walls, and digital platforms
  • Coordination across disciplines to solve complex technology challenges
  • Lessons learned and strategies for future ready airport technology

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs

Upon completion of this course, attendees will receive .1 CEU/1 PDH. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 30 days of the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
