MEET THE CHAIR

YeongAe Heo, Ph.D., EIT, M.ASCE

Dr. YeongAe Heo is a structural engineer with more than 20 years of experience in research, engineering practice, and professional leadership focused on structural safety and resilience under multi-hazard conditions. Her career began with research on the seismic performance and risk assessment of multistory reinforced concrete buildings and has expanded to structural safety and resilience of offshore, nuclear, and conventional and renewable energy facilities under extreme hazards.

Her expertise encompasses seismic, coastal, blast, fire, explosion, impact, and other extreme hazards, as well as nonlinear dynamic analysis, finite-element modeling, code-based design, design load evaluation, probabilistic hazard and risk assessment, and risk-informed design of critical energy infrastructure. Her professional experience spans national laboratories, academia, and industry, providing a broad perspective on translating research and advanced analytical methods into engineering practice. 

She has led mission-critical research and development projects, authored more than 40 peer ­reviewed publications and 20 technical reports, contributed to the development and enhancement of professional codes and standards, and mentored engineers and students at all career stages. She currently serves as Chair of the ASCE/SEI Multi-Hazard Mitigation Committee and Vice President of the ASCE New Mexico Section Northern Branch.
