What we learn over and over, is that many, if not most, SEI members join the institute and become more deeply engaged because a colleague invited them to do so. That’s true for me, for most of the SEI Board of Governors, and may be true for you. The SEI Board of Governors and committee leaders work hard for you — SEI members — to prioritize and deliver a wide range of opportunities and benefits for you to become engaged even more.
This month there are so many ways you can join in activities to advance your career and the profession including joining a committee, contributing your voice to public comments or surveys, or nominating a deserving colleague for a prestigious award. As your colleague, I invite you to lean in and engage in SEI, advance your career and the profession, network, and have fun! Joining a committee is a sure way to contribute to cutting edge topics and get to know the professionals driving the change. Engineering philosophy, multihazard mitigation, wildfire, and ocean aquaculture are just a few novel topics looking for your passion; read details below.
For those of you who are early career professionals, SEI makes it easy for you to join in! Per the SEI Bylaws every committee is required to include young professional members, and SEI offers scholarships to attend our conferences, in fact the applications for scholarships to ASCE 2027 are now open, apply today. And naturally, we want to hear from you about what interests you and how SEI can further serve your needs. Please respond to the Young Professional survey, this will inform the Young Professional Committee of your priorities.
And finally, it is the time of year when we remind you to consider the accomplishments of your peers and encourage you to nominate them for the awards they deserve. Awards recognize technical advancement, service, professional achievements and most nominations are due Nov. 1!
